About the Author, Dean Crawford

I am a lawyer practicing at Pulver Crawford Munroe LLP, a labour and employment law firm based in Vancouver.

My practice combines my professional training and experience in the law with my long-standing interest and experience in public policy.

I practice employment law, focussing on the areas of unfair competition and wrongful dimissal litigation. I have a particular interest in the law around unfair competition in Canada.

I have written and been published in this area. I was one of the authors of the “Canada” chapter in Restrictive Covenants and trade Secrets in Employment Law: An International Survey, BNA Books, 2010.

I have also written about alternatives to the use of traditional restrictive covenants: “Protecting Employers from the Departing Employee: Alternatives to the Use of Restrictive Covenants”, The Advocate, January 2006.

My practice also includes a solicitors practice, in which I regularly advise employers and employees on aspects of the employment relationship, prepare employment contracts and undertake due diligence in the context of mergers and acquisitions.

I also advise on labour relations matters in respect of unionized workplaces.

I have previously taught employment law at the University of Victoria law school. I have written and presented a number of papers on employment law issues to lawyers and clients.

The other significant area of my practice is in government relations and public policy. Early in my legal career, I spent two years in Ottawa as a political assistant to the federal Minister of Justice. I served in the same position when that minister became Minister of Health.

Since returning to Vancouver in the late 90s, I have developed a government relations and public policy practice. I provide strategic advice to clients on their interaction with government and analysis on the impact of proposed initiatives. My advice extends to review and analysis of legislative and regulatory initiatives and the preparation of briefing notes for clients for presentation to government.

I am very involved with my professional association, the Canadian Bar Association, and am a Past-President of the British Columbia Branch.

I am available to provide advice to both employers and employees concerning competition by former employees and related strategies or any other employment law questions. I can be reached at dcrawford@pcmlawyers.ca.
